InterOppt: Supporting Student

The United Kingdom is the second largest market for international education, but is dramatically losing its market share to the USA & rapidly progressing Australia. The USA attracts more that twice the numbers of total students than the UK, while Australia is experiencing tremendous growth rates, eating into U.K’s international market share. The UK government has sponsored various initiatives to propel the number ofinternational students, with the ambition to become the leading destination country, for international education. However, the most important concern that the UK Government / Universities need to address is student career development.

Jobs Assistance: UK Universities charge extortionate amounts of fee frominternational students, but fail to assist the students with jobs and career. It is vital that students are duly assisted with their careers, so that British education, plus relevant British work experience, helps a students to find suitable employment in the UK. British Universities needs to take some initiate to provide international students with some kind of work experience or even internship, so that students get the all important British Work experience, vital for their career development. Most of the students struggle to find employment in the UK, and even in their home nations, and end up really struggling even after spending a fortune for obtaining a western education.

Career Service: I must admit, most of the career services departments in British Universities are there for the sake of formality. They are not able to provide efficient career advisory services to international students, probably because it is difficult to cater to around 25,000 students. If University career services cannot help in providing jobs to international students, they should at-least assist them with CV’s, Covering Letters and Interview Skills, so that students get use to the British professional environment as soon as possible.
